After Ike
Tina Turner died in Zurich on May 24, 2023. She was 83. The obituaries called it a "late career resurgence."
That's the comfortable version.
The less comfortable version: what we call her "late career" was her career. The first part was someone else's enterprise, running on her talent, under his name. "Ike and Tina Turner" — note whose name comes first, note whose voice you were there to hear. The ordering was not incidental.
For those who somehow missed the documentary, the autobiography, or the basic cultural record: Ike Turner was abusive. The abuse was systematic and sustained. The control was total. And under those conditions, she still produced extraordinary work — which is either the most remarkable thing about her, or the most damning thing about those conditions, and possibly both simultaneously.
Here's what survival stories usually do at this point: they pivot to triumph. She escaped. She rebuilt. She played stadiums while Ike played small clubs. She won the Grammy Awards. She married a man who adored her. She moved to Switzerland and lived the life the first chapter never allowed. The arc bends toward justice. The hero wins.
That story isn't wrong. It just doesn't ask the harder question.
The harder question is this: how much of her greatest work was forged by surviving the diminishment, and how much was always there, waiting for the circumstances that would let it breathe?
Private Dancer came out in 1984. She was 44. It sold 20 million copies. The stadium tours followed. The sheer scale of what she built in the second chapter makes the first chapter look like a compressed spring — all that force held tight, finally released.
The comfortable frame: she was so resilient she flourished despite everything.
The uncomfortable frame: the "despite" is the problem. The second chapter is what the first chapter was suppressing.
Identity is river, not stone. The river didn't change when the dam came down. The river was always that. What changed was the obstacle.
We love survival stories because they let us focus on the person's strength without sitting too long with what required that strength in the first place. The narrative convenience of "she overcame" is that we don't have to dwell on what was being overcome — or ask how many people are currently in the same position, their full capacity compressed under the weight of the wrong circumstances, producing extraordinary work under conditions designed to exhaust them.
Tina Turner's life makes the inspirational case. It also makes the structural argument, and the structural argument is less comfortable: the second chapter had to wait for the first chapter to end. The real chapter was always possible. It was just unavailable.
The question worth sitting with, after the tributes settle: who else is in Act One?
Rest easy. The river found the ocean.
