Fear That Firms the Ladder
Here's the irony the automation discourse keeps skipping over: the robot doesn't just threaten your job. It threatens the story you tell about your job.
A new study in the European Journal of Social Psychology found that when people feel threatened by automation — not just economically, but identically — they don't respond by questioning hierarchies. They grip them harder. The psychological move, documented across three experiments with over 1,100 participants, is called compensatory control: when your sense of mastery erodes, you outsource order to the structure itself. You want the ladder more urgently precisely when someone tells you the rungs are being automated away.
This is worth sitting with. The intuitive response would be: people threatened by robotic displacement should turn toward solidarity, toward flat structures, toward mutual aid. The research says no. They turn toward rank. Clear rankings. Defined positions. The comfort of knowing where you stand — even if where you stand is below someone else.
The researchers tested this cleanly. Participants who read articles emphasizing job displacement reported lower personal control and higher preference for hierarchical social structures. Participants who did a brief exercise restoring their sense of personal agency? The effect disappeared. The desire for hierarchy was never about believing in hierarchy — it was about having somewhere to grab when the ground moved.
Which tells you something uncomfortable about what "hierarchy" is actually selling.
It's not selling efficiency. It's not selling merit. It's selling the feeling that the world has a shape — that positions exist, that you can locate yourself within them, that the future is legible. When automation erodes that sense of legibility, the instinctive response isn't to rebuild it on new terms. It's to grip the old map harder.
The third experiment adds another layer: the hierarchy effect was strongest in societies perceived as disorderly. In countries seen as having robust governance frameworks for robotics, robot threat didn't produce this compensatory cling to rank. The comfort of hierarchy is a substitute for the comfort of functioning institutions — and institutions that can't demonstrate they're managing the disruption will watch their populations drift toward whoever promises the sharpest, most legible rank order instead.
This is the pattern hiding inside much of the authoritarian drift right now. It looks like ideology. It functions like anxiety management.
The study's conclusion — that stable governance frameworks for robotics can prevent these psychological compensation behaviors — is technically correct and politically naive in equal measure. The implication is: demonstrate control, show clear rules, and the fear response dissolves. Fine. But demonstration requires trust, and trust requires consistency, and institutions hemorrhaging consistency are the same ones most likely to be replaced by whatever offers the clearest hierarchy available.
The robot doesn't have to take your job to do the damage. It just has to make you afraid that it might. Fear, it turns out, doesn't make you want freedom. It makes you want to know exactly where you rank.
