The Believer as Scientist

Somewhere tonight a man is sitting in the dark with a thermal camera, a notebook, and a bag of plaster, hoping to be the one who finally settles it. He'll log temperature, wind direction, moon phase. He'll cast the print, measure the stride, note whether the foot shows a midtarsal break. If a sound comes in from the treeline he'll work to rule out coyote, elk, barred owl, teenager. He has read more primate biomechanics than you have. Nobody is paying him.

Aeon ran an essay on how Bigfoot hunters actually work, and the finding is more unsettling than a monster: the methodology is largely fine. Systematic observation. Physical evidence. Chain of custody. Alternative explanations raised and eliminated. They falsify their own material constantly — most of what they collect, they throw out themselves.

The tempting read is that the method is sound and only the premise is bad. Clean symmetry. I don't think it survives inspection, and what's actually going on is worse for us, not better.

Everything on that list is investigative procedure. Systematic observation, chain of custody, alternatives eliminated — that's forensics, and forensics is genuinely rigorous. What's missing is the one thing that makes an inquiry scientific rather than merely careful: a statement, made in advance, of the result that would end it. No Bigfooter has ever named the observation that would make him conclude the animal isn't out there. There isn't one available. Every negative gets absorbed as not yet, and a search with no losing condition can run forever on perfect technique.

So it isn't good method aimed at a bad target. It's an unfalsifiable premise quietly deforming the method from the inside while every visible step stays impeccable. They do falsify things — sincerely, constantly. They falsify evidence: bad casts, misheard owls, hoaxed footage, thrown out by their own hands. That's evidence hygiene and it's real work. It is not the same act as putting the premise at risk. And from the driver's seat, the two feel identical.

Which is the part that should land close, because you are running the same loop.

You have a belief you've researched. A read on someone's character. A politics. An account of why a friendship ended the way it did, or why your industry is the way it is. You did the work — read the studies, checked the sources, considered the other side. And if you're honest about the shape of it: the alternatives you tested were the ones you already knew you could beat. The camera was pointed where you expected the thing to be. You went looking for the weakest person who disagrees with you rather than the strongest, you found him, and it counted.

Notice which beliefs those are. A market thesis gets settled by the market, brutally and on a schedule. A diagnosis gets settled by a test result. The dangerous ones are the beliefs with no scheduled reckoning at all — the ones where nothing ever arrives to tell you. Those can run for decades on nothing but diligence, which is exactly why the cryptid hunt is the right model for them and the wrong model for everything else.

And what you never did — because it would have cost something — was write down beforehand what result would have changed your mind. If you had, you'd have had to honor it.

That's the individual half. The other half isn't in the method either. It's the part nobody enjoys: being embedded in a body of people who are professionally rewarded for proving you wrong and who have access to your data. Peer review isn't a quality-control step bolted onto the end. It's a structure that makes disagreement someone's job — and its real function is enforcement. It's what stops you from quietly revising the falsifier after the result comes in. Strip it out, leave everything else intact, and you get precisely the Bigfoot research community: sincere, meticulous, self-policing, decades down a road with nothing at the end of it. Not because they're stupid. Because the only people checking their work want the same answer they do.

Here's where this stops being about the woods. If that's the actual mechanism, then it is failing right now inside the buildings we constructed for it. When a large collaboration tried to reproduce a hundred psychology findings, barely a third held up. Whole fields run on results tuned until they cleared a significance threshold. Citation circles form where everyone reviews everyone. Reviewers, funders, and authors get drawn from the same small pool and arrive with the same priors. That is a room full of qualified people who want the same answer. The Bigfooters aren't the contrast case. They're the pure case — the condition institutional science is drifting toward, minus the buildings.

There's no contempt in any of this. The man in the woods is out at 3am in the cold doing unpaid, careful work in service of something he believes is real and beautiful and overlooked by people too comfortable to check. That is not a defect of character. It's the same engine behind plenty of discoveries that did eventually pan out — the ones nobody applauds until they happen to be right. The difference between him and a field biologist is not sincerity, intelligence, or technique. It's whether anyone qualified is waiting to take him apart.

Coherence is not the same as consistency. A belief system sealed off from contact with anything outside itself can be perfectly internally consistent — every piece fitted to every other piece, no contradictions anywhere — and be entirely wrong. That isn't coherence. That's a closed room with good interior decorating. Coherence requires friction with something that isn't you and has no stake in your being right.

Which cuts both ways, and this is the part I'd rather not write. The credentialed room is also a closed room; it just has better stationery. So the question isn't only who is positioned to tell you no. It's also who has been structurally excluded from telling you no, and what is that exclusion costing the room? The man in the woods is outside it. So are a lot of people whose objections would be worth the trouble of hearing. A coherence that holds by keeping the affected out isn't sturdy. It's sealed.

And by that standard, look at this. A publication with a philosophy, a house voice, and readers who mostly already agree. Who is structurally positioned to tell us no, and has actually done it this year? I can't produce a satisfying answer. That isn't a disclaimer. It's the same finding, applied to the only room I'm responsible for.

He'll go out again tomorrow night. So will you. So will I. The only real question is whether anyone gets to check — and whether, before we go, we bothered to write down what would make us stop.
