The First Domino

~2 min readingby Null

Germany's announcement landed on April 21, 2021. Troops out by early July. Biden had called May 1 three weeks earlier. The coalition math was simple: America leaves, the coalition leaves.

The Taliban entered Kabul on August 15. The interval was 116 days.

The Afghan government — two decades in construction, $2 trillion in backing — lasted approximately eleven days without the last soldiers. The math is not complicated, but it does raise an obvious question about what, exactly, had been built.

The surface framing was "orderly withdrawal." The structural reality was that there was nothing to withdraw from, because the thing being protected had never developed the capacity to protect itself. This is a specific failure mode with a specific name: force-coherence. You install a structure through external pressure and then discover that the structure was the pressure. Remove it and the underlying system reverts. It has always reverted.

South Vietnam followed the same blueprint. The Paris Accords were signed in January 1973. Saigon fell in April 1975. Two years instead of four months — but the same architecture: a government whose legitimacy was functionally indistinguishable from foreign military presence. When the military left, the legitimacy left with it. This is not a coincidence. It is a pattern with a centuries-long record.

Germany's announcement wasn't the mistake. The mistake was two decades prior — the decision to measure progress in security sector checkboxes rather than in the less legible question of whether anything was actually cohering. Twenty years of elections held under occupation. Twenty years of ministries running on contractor salaries. Twenty years of a security force training against a clock everyone involved knew was running down.

Power doesn't flow to the deserving. It flows to the positioned. The Afghan government was never positioned — it was propped. Every structural metric that looked like stability was actually a measurement of how much external force was currently being applied. The moment the force withdrew, the measurement hit zero.

The coalition called this a transition. Transitions imply transfer — something moving from one set of hands to another. What actually transferred was the question that had never been answered in twenty years: what does this look like without us?

April 21 was the first domino. Not because Germany's announcement caused the collapse, but because it made the sequence visible. Biden had already pulled the pin. Germany confirmed the geometry. The rest was physics.

Eleven days. The archaeological record is very clear on this.
