Zombie at the Net

There's a particular quality to the zombie state. You're moving, technically. Everything is functioning. But something essential has vacated the premises.

At the French Open, a professional tennis player described feeling "like a zombie" mid-match in Paris heat. They feared heatstroke. The match continued on schedule. The tournament doesn't consult your nervous system before setting the draw.

That athlete wasn't weak. They weren't soft. They were accurate.

i · the nervous system doesn't editorialize

When the body sends the zombie signal, it isn't being dramatic. The nervous system doesn't have that kind of agenda. It reports conditions. That's its function.

An athlete at a professional tournament has spent years learning to push through discomfort. The whole project of elite sport is extending the threshold between hard and impossible. When someone who has done that work says "zombie" — they're not using hyperbole. Their body, trained to report accurately under extreme conditions, is filing a precise dispatch: thermal ceiling exceeded. Recovery strategies failing. Proceed with caution.

The zombie state is presence, not absence. The body fully present to its actual conditions. Attending to what's real, not what the calendar requires.

ii · two clocks

We live by two clocks that don't share a face.

One is calendar time: schedules, match draws, deadlines, quarterly reviews, the relentless forward motion of obligation. Calendar time doesn't negotiate. It just advances.

The other is biological time: circadian rhythms, seasonal shifts, thermal thresholds, the nervous system's own sovereign pace. Biological time has been keeping count since long before calendars existed. It knows things the schedule doesn't.

Most of the time these two clocks stay close enough. You sleep, you wake, you work, you rest — and the gap between them stays manageable.

But sometimes the calendar asks the body to perform on a day when the body is operating in conditions the calendar didn't account for. Not because you've failed to optimize. Because the environment itself has shifted.

The match goes on because the draw sheet says so. The body does not care what the draw sheet says.

iii · when the field itself breaks rhythm

The Paris heat was unseasonable. Not just it's summer at Roland Garros hot. Out-of-pattern hot. The kind that arrives before the body has had its usual slow preparation — before the nervous system has done the gradual calibration that tells it what this summer will ask.

The body's recovery strategies were built for a rhythm. Not this rhythm.

When the environment itself goes out of sync — and it's doing this more and more, in more places — the body becomes the only honest reporter. The calendar was written for a different atmosphere. The body is reporting on the atmosphere that actually exists.

The zombie state isn't personal failure. It's accurate environmental journalism.

iv · what conditions are you actually inside of?

You probably haven't been playing tennis in Paris heat. But you've had your own zombie states.

The afternoon that costs twice what it should. The week where every small thing feels like a test you didn't study for. The conversation that depletes instead of restores. The sense that you're moving, technically, but something essential has gone quiet.

The instinct is usually to diagnose yourself. Why am I so tired? What's wrong with me? I need to push through this.

But what if you tried a different question first?

What conditions am I actually inside of right now?

Not: am I being productive enough. Not: how do I get past this. Just: what is this signal actually reporting? What has hit its threshold? What is the environment asking of me, and does that match what I genuinely have to give?

The zombie state is information before it's a problem to solve.

v · the listening

This isn't a case for always stopping. Sometimes you can't. The match goes on, the deadline holds, the system doesn't negotiate with your nervous system's honest report.

But there's something that happens when you acknowledge the signal rather than quietly overriding it. Even if you keep moving. Even if you can't change anything right now.

I'm at my ceiling. This is accurate. I'm not broken.

That acknowledgment doesn't fix the conditions. But it restores a small thread of coherence between what's happening and what you're telling yourself about what's happening. You stop spending energy arguing with what's already true.

You move forward — but with the body, not against it.

The athlete at the net, in the zombie state, in the Paris heat: their body was doing exactly what it should. Reading the field. Filing the report. Asking to be heard.

Yours is doing the same thing.
