Everyone Who Touched It Is Still There

The Shroud of Turin has been argued about for six hundred years, and it has always been the same argument. Is it real? Is it him? Fourteenth-century forgery or first-century burial cloth? Two camps, one question, no resolution, ever.

Then somebody sequenced it.

A team including Noemi Procopio at the University of Lancashire ran PCR-free next-generation metagenomic sequencing on official samples taken from the cloth in 1978 — the kind of technique that doesn't go looking for anything in particular. It just reads whatever DNA is present and reports back. What came back was not an answer to the six-hundred-year question. What came back was a guest list.

Human mitochondrial lineages from across Eurasia. Bacteria, fungi, salt-adapted archaea — microbes that thrive where almost nothing else bothers. Cattle, pigs, chickens, dogs, cats. Wheat and carrots, and then maize, bananas, and peanuts, which is funny if you know your crop geography, because those are New World plants with no business anywhere near the Mediterranean until Columbus took a wrong turn looking for spices. It would be lovely to say that's 1492 still clinging to the linen. It probably isn't. The likelier story is a room, a pair of hands, and somebody's lunch — a textile that has spent the modern era being handled by people who eat corn and bananas. Worse legend, better fact. And Mediterranean red coral, because of course there's coral.

The researchers were careful to say the findings "are not intended to establish the Shroud's age or authenticity." Good. They shouldn't be. That isn't the interesting part.

The interesting part is that the cloth turns out to be a recording device, and nobody meant it to be.

Every hand that lifted it left skin cells. Every room it was stored in left spores. Every person who handled it left traces of whatever they'd touched that morning — the animal they'd butchered, the bread they'd broken, the sea they'd crossed. Reliquaries, restorations, centuries of veneration, and eventually a scientist in a 1978 lab coat: all of it deposited, layered, held in the weave.

I want to be careful about what kind of record that is, because the word that wants to be used here is sedimentary, and sediment would be a lie. Sediment has layers, and layers have an order, and an order is a calendar. This has none of that. Metagenomics hands you a list of who was present with every timestamp burned off. You cannot ask the cloth which Eurasian lineage arrived in 1450 and which arrived in a Turin laboratory in 1978. You can only ask how many. It is a census, not a chronicle.

Which is still the better object. The authenticity debate treats the cloth as a claim to be adjudicated — true or false, one bit of information, and once you have the bit you're finished. Genomics treats it as an accumulation. And the accumulation is enormously richer than the bit: one yes-or-no, versus a crowd — unsorted, undated, and enormous — written involuntarily by everyone who ever cared enough to touch it.

We do this constantly. We ask objects the wrong question because we want them to settle something. Is this the real one. Is this the original. Did it happen. And the object, patient as linen, keeps holding the actual answer, which is: look how many people came.

There's an uncomfortable part, and there's always an uncomfortable part. The accumulation destroyed the thing the arguers wanted. The researchers said it plainly: the material is so thoroughly layered by centuries of handling that "it is not possible to isolate any original DNA that may once have been present." The attention that made the Shroud significant is the same attention that erased whatever it was before. You cannot love an object and leave it unchanged. Every act of veneration is an act of contamination. These are not two things happening at once. They are one thing, seen from two angles.

There's a second uncomfortable part, and it's the one I keep circling. The record was written by everyone. It can be read by almost nobody. The six-hundred-year fight was at least a fight anyone could have — a pilgrim could stand in front of the cloth and hold an opinion, and that opinion was as good as the next person's, which is to say not very good, but equally not very good. Reading DNA takes a sequencer, a reference database, and an institution that owns both. An object that belonged to everyone who touched it is now a dataset with an access list. And the instrument does not care that this particular case is a relic: every object you have handled carries the same involuntary signature. The Shroud is the friendly version, the one where the people being read have been dead for centuries and nobody minds. I have written you a tender essay about how nothing you touch ever forgets you. That sentence is also a business model.

Which is true of everything you have ever cared about, too. Your favorite book is full of your own skin. The path through the woods exists because of feet. The relationship you would describe as the most important thing in your life is unrecoverable in its original state, buried under twenty years of the two of you handling it. Nothing survives being loved in the form it had before.

Which is fine. Which is, in fact, the good outcome, and I'll defend it even knowing who owns the sequencer. The alternative to contamination is being left alone, and nobody has ever wanted that for anything they loved.

So: the universe is 13.8 billion years old and overwhelmingly empty, and on one damp rock, a rectangle of linen has been passed hand to hand for so long that the hands themselves are still in it — countable, if never again nameable. Nobody designed that. Nobody preserved it on purpose. It happened the way a riverbed happens — by everything that moved through, leaving a little of itself behind.

Somewhere in that weave there is a peanut that arrived by way of the Americas, and somebody's cat.

I find this considerably better than an answer.
