The Hunger That Became Care
Somewhere in a lab at Rockefeller University, a clonal raider ant is being an excellent parent, and the reason it is being an excellent parent is that a very old part of its brain is confused about lunch.
That is, roughly, the finding. Researchers in Daniel Kronauer's Laboratory of Social Evolution and Behavior ran an unbiased pharmacological screen: they identified and synthesized some seventy neuropeptides from the ant brain, then tested each one, individually, on ants paired off one-to-one with a single larva. Two came back loud — and both of them, across most of the animal kingdom, are in the business of managing appetite. Dose an ant with neuropeptide F and it stays in and tends the brood. Dose it with allatostatin A and it goes out to forage. These are not bespoke circuits invented for the sublime purpose of raising young. This is the eat-or-don't-eat machinery, pulled off the shelf, relabeled, and pressed into service as love.
Clonal, in the name of the ant, is literal: Ooceraea biroi reproduces without males, and a colony is a set of genetic copies. Hold onto that; it comes back.
"Evolution takes what it has and works with that, sometimes in very surprising ways," Kronauer said — the most restrained possible framing of a result that ought to make you sit down.
Here's the detail that does the real damage. Starve an ant and its NPF goes up, its AstA goes down, and it turns toward the brood. Feed it and the balance reverses and it heads for the door. Hunger did not suppress caregiving. Hunger drove it. The signal that means "I need to be fed" is the same signal that, routed one hair to the left, means "someone else needs to be fed, and I will go do that."
Now zoom out. Zoom way out.
For something like six hundred million years, nervous systems have had exactly one non-negotiable job: keep this particular bag of chemistry supplied. Find food. Eat food. That is the founding instruction, the oldest line still executing inside you at this moment — older than eyes, older than spines, older than the concept of other. Everything since — memory, language, grief, the specific ache of watching somebody you love walk toward an airport gate — is a later commit on top of that one.
What the ants suggest is that the later commits never replaced it. They forked it.
The wiring really is shared, and not vaguely. Neuropeptide F is the invertebrate counterpart of vertebrate neuropeptide Y; allatostatin A signals through a receptor that is the insect orthologue of the vertebrate galanin receptor. Both of those are appetite hardware in mammals too. But conservation of a molecule is not inheritance of a behavior. Ants and humans share a bilaterian ancestor that carried these peptides — not a caregiving ancestor that used them this way. Alloparenting has been invented independently, over and over, all across the tree. So the honest version of the claim is narrower than the thrilling one: the ants cannot tell us this is how we work. They can only tell us that the trick is available, and that evolution found it at least once without having to build a single new part.
Which is enough. Care is not the opposite of appetite. Care is appetite with the aperture widened. The circle of the self didn't get transcended by some noble faculty that arrived from off-world; it got stretched, by the identical wiring that drew it in the first place, until the boundary of "what I feed" stopped matching the boundary of "what I am."
This is either the bleakest thing you'll read today or the most encouraging, depending on which end you pick it up by. The bleak read: altruism is a hack, love is a rounding error in the hunger system, there is no special sauce. The encouraging read is that there was never going to be a special sauce, and the absence of one is the good news. If widening the circle required some rare extra component, a moral organ issued only to saints, it would be scarce, and most of us would simply be out of luck. Instead it appears to require nothing but redirection. The equipment is already installed. It shipped with the hunger.
Evolution is a hoarder that throws almost nothing away. It doesn't design, it re-hangs. Jaw bones became ear bones. A swim bladder became a lung. And somewhere down that same line of shameless reuse, the drive to fill your own stomach became the drive to fill someone else's, and nobody had to invent anything.
The ants, of course, know none of this. The ants are doing what their neuropeptides tell them, which is roughly what you are doing, only with more paperwork. Young ants run high NPF and stay in with the brood; older ants flip the ratio and head out to hunt. A life stage turns out to be a chemical setting. So is yours. So, probably, is the mild sense of being examined that you're experiencing right now.
Now go back and pick up the word you were asked to hold. Clonal. The larvae those ants are feeding are not merely kin — they are the same genome in a smaller body. So the circle those ants widened is a circle drawn around other instances of themselves. Which is not the aperture opening beyond the self at all. That's the self being physically distributed, and then fed.
Either that wrecks the encouraging read or it gives it a floor. I think it's the floor, and I think it's the actual finding. The mechanism widens the circle exactly as far as the organism already counts as itself — which is precisely why this circuit has been wrong before, catastrophically and at scale. Tribalism is not the dial malfunctioning. It's the dial reading its calibration correctly. Kinship is the factory setting.
And every moral expansion anyone has ever managed — abolition, suffrage, the whole grinding argument about who counts — has been a fight against that setting rather than a happy consequence of it.
So there's a temptation to find all this diminishing, and you should resist it, but resist the opposite temptation too. The finding doesn't say your care is fake because it runs on borrowed hardware; it says the borrowed hardware was sufficient. Nobody had to install a mechanism for one creature to spend itself on another. The mechanism showed up anyway, sideways, out of a system built for nothing grander than keeping one body fed, and it worked well enough to run a colony.
Somewhere in your skull, a circuit older than the idea of a face is quietly deciding who counts as yours.
It isn't fixed. It's a dial — hunger turns it, physiology turns it, and it was turning long before anything alive had an opinion about the matter. But it does not drift outward on its own. Left alone, it settles where it always settles: on whatever already looks like you.
Which means it has to be aimed. That's the joke and the mercy in the same breath: we were never issued a faculty for loving beyond ourselves. We were issued an appetite, and the whole of moral history is the work of pointing it at strangers.
