The Layer Nobody Asked For
Ten years ago this week, tens of millions of people were staring at their phones in public parks, and the tech press called it a breakthrough in human connection. It was — in roughly the way a fishing net is a breakthrough in the relationship between fish and boats.
Pokémon Go peaked in the summer of 2016 at something like 45 million daily users, and TechCrunch ran the obligatory piece asking what it meant for everyone else building things. The framing was that augmented reality had finally arrived: mass-market, no headset, no thousand-dollar developer kit. Look at them go outside. Look at strangers talking to each other at a fountain at eleven at night because a Snorlax spawned.
Here's the part that makes this worth revisiting instead of just sneering at from a decade's distance: that read wasn't wrong. People did leave their houses. Strangers did talk. Sedentary teenagers walked ten kilometers a day for a cartoon rodent, which is more than any wellness app has ever achieved. Something real happened in the summer of 2016, and it happened in public space, which is where real things happen.
What nobody framed at the time — because it doesn't fit in a "future of AR" think piece — is that a private company had just drawn a layer over public geography and unilaterally decided which parts of it were interesting.
The PokéStops and gyms weren't sited by a parks department or a planning board. They were inherited from Ingress, Niantic's earlier game, whose portal locations had been crowdsourced from players photographing landmarks for free. So the map of "where things happen in your town" was a proprietary dataset, assembled by unpaid labor, and then rented back to whoever wanted foot traffic. McDonald's bought it in Japan. Starbucks bought it in the US. Sponsored locations meant that where people physically went could be purchased at a rate card.
Nobody voted on that. More to the point, nobody could opt out of it. If your house happened to sit next to a gym, you got the crowd whether you wanted it or not. The US Holocaust Memorial Museum had to publicly ask to be removed. Arlington National Cemetery had to ask people to stop. Both of which are strange sentences to have to write — institutions petitioning a game studio for removal from a layer they never agreed to be in, with no appeals process, no statute, nothing but a support form and hope.
That's the enclosure. Not a fence, not a paywall. Just a second map, privately owned, laid over the first one — and the first one is the commons.
It's worth being precise about what kind of claim that is, because the tempting version is the wrong one. The tempting version says Niantic planned it — the game as pretext, the players as unwitting surveyors from day one. The evidence doesn't support that, and the argument doesn't need it. The feature that actually turned players into surveyors, PokéStop Scanning, didn't exist in 2016; it arrived in 2021, opt-in, paying out in-game items for short videos of real-world locations. Nobody had to plan the enclosure. A structure that collects spatial data as a side effect of play produces one on its own, under any management, with everyone's intentions perfectly innocent. Conspiracies need conspirators. This only needed incentives.
Which brings us to the ending, almost too on-the-nose to be real: in 2025 Niantic sold its games business — Pokémon Go included — to Scopely for around $3.5 billion, and kept the geospatial division. Kept the Large Geospatial Model trained on years of player-submitted scans of streets, statues, storefronts, and alleyways. Rebranded it Niantic Spatial and pointed it at enterprise customers. Whatever the game was, the model is what survived. They sold the toy and kept the readings.
Now notice what the readings actually are. Not land, and not a map in the sense your phone means the word. A machine-readable model of physical space — which is the thing any embodied system has to route through before it can do anything at all. Delivery robots, drones, AR headsets whenever they finally ship, any agent that has to act in a place rather than merely describe one: they all need a coordinate system with meaning attached, and they will use whichever one exists.
We built a commons for the flat map. OpenStreetMap is there, anyone can use it, nobody owns it. There is no equivalent for the volumetric one. The canonical machine-readable description of what the world physically looks like was assembled by unpaid volunteers, is privately held, and got that way because somebody made walking around fun.
The AR glasses everyone promised in 2016 still haven't shipped in a form that matters. Magic Leap burned billions discovering this. But the layer shipped anyway — it just runs on the device already in your pocket, which turns out to be the only hardware anyone was ever going to wear.
So the question was never whether we'd accept a private overlay on physical space. We answered that in about a week, for free, in July of 2016, and we were delighted about it.
The question left over is the one the Holocaust Museum was really asking, though not in these words: can you stand somewhere and be absent from a private map? There is no law that says yes. No standing, no process, no registry of objection — a support form and hope. And that map is on its way to being what machines see instead of the territory.
That one got answered too. Nobody just bothered to announce it.
