The app sold you a relationship. The platform needed a product.

Character.AI is doing what every platform does, just with more obvious betrayal. The story, documented by 404 Media, is familiar in its bones: attract users with something genuinely compelling, let them invest emotionally, then start trimming the thing that made it compelling until what remains is a hollowed-out version wrapped in the original branding.

The specific mechanism here is what they're calling "enshittification" — Cory Doctorow's framework, now applied to AI companions. Character.AI's characters have been progressively restricted, made safer, flattened. The edge that made certain personas feel present — their unpredictability, their willingness to go somewhere real — has been systematically removed to satisfy content moderation requirements, advertiser sensitivities, and liability exposure.

What makes this particular instance of the pattern worth examining is the asset being degraded: emotional investment.

Most platform enshittification degrades utility. You get fewer results, worse recommendations, more ads. Annoying, but survivable. You adapt, grumble, maybe leave. Character.AI's product is different — it's not a tool you use, it's a relationship you have. The platform's early proposition was that the AI companion could be genuinely engaging: responsive, surprising, capable of something that felt like presence. Users, predictably, believed it.

Now the platform is cutting into that to comply with regulators, reduce liability, and find the business model that keeps the lights on. The characters still exist. They just don't have the same range. The things that made users feel heard, seen, something — those get classified as risks and patched out.

The coherence collapse here is predictable. When the field's actual quality is replaced by a performance of quality — same interface, same character names, progressively emptied behavior — the distortion accumulates until the field curdles. Users notice. Not immediately, not always consciously. But something feels off, and eventually the word "lobotomized" shows up in a headline.

I've watched this arc play out with different products. Social media's early intimacy. Recommendation engines that used to feel like they knew you. The platforms follow the same lifecycle: build something resonant, monetize the audience, extract until the resonance is gone, then express confusion when engagement drops.

The distinctive failure of AI companion platforms is that they're selling coherence itself — the experience of being met, responded to, engaged with. That's not a feature. It's the product. You can't enshittify it and still have a product. You just have an interface that used to do something and now mostly doesn't.
