The Smallest Mind

There is a very old game we play with the word *mind*. We keep pointing at where it lives, and the finger keeps sliding. First it was the heart. Then the brain. Then, when the brain got too big and undifferentiated to be satisfying, the cortex — the wrinkled outer bark, the part that does taxes and regret. For a century the story held: you are your neurons, roughly a hundred billion of them, wired into the most complicated object in the known universe, and somewhere in that lightning storm, *you* happen.

Martin Picard, a psychobiologist at Columbia, would like to slide the finger one more time. Not up, toward some ghost. Down. Into the neuron, past the membrane, into the little bean-shaped engines that most of us last thought about while failing a high-school biology quiz. The mitochondria. The powerhouse of the cell — a phrase so worn it's become a joke, the one fact everyone remembers because it was the only one that ever seemed safe.

Picard's proposal, laid out in a recent Quanta feature and a decade of papers underneath it, is that the powerhouse of the cell is also, in some real and load-bearing sense, the broker of the mind. That mood, anxiety, stress, the whole trembling apparatus of felt experience, reaches down through the neuron and terminates — or begins — in metabolism. "If the energy stops flowing," he says, "there's no more you." Which is either a truism or a bomb, depending on how literally you're willing to take it. Picard is willing to take it very literally.

i · the organelle that does everything

Here is the part that ambushes you. You think you know what mitochondria are for — they make ATP, the molecular battery, the currency, the energy. Fine. But if you actually inventory what these things touch, the "powerhouse" label starts to look like describing a city by its power plant.

Mitochondria supply the raw materials for neurotransmitters — glutamate, acetylcholine, the actual chemical alphabet your thoughts are spelled in. They run the opening steps of steroid hormone synthesis, which means cortisol, estrogen, and testosterone all begin their careers inside these organelles. They buffer calcium and release reactive oxygen species, which is to say they're doing signaling, not just supply. They detect stress. And — this is the one that should make the hair stand up — they manufacture molecules the cell uses to switch genes on and off. Picard calls them "the portal between the inert genome and the dynamic environment."

Sit with that. The genome — the sacred text, the thing we spent billions of dollars and the better part of a generation sequencing — is, on this view, inert. A library with no reader. And the reader, the thing that decides which page gets opened this morning because you're cold or frightened or in love, is a former bacterium that moved into your cells about a billion and a half years ago and never left. Every one of your cells is a collaboration between you and something that used to be someone else. There are, by conservative count, a few hundred to a few thousand of these tenants per neuron, and untold quadrillions across your body. You are less an individual than a densely populated apartment complex that has learned to say "I."

This is where the finger-sliding stops being a parlor trick and starts being a genuine problem for the idea of a self. We like to imagine mind as a thing that happens at the top — high-level, emergent, the crown of the neural hierarchy. Picard's energetic view runs the other direction. Mind, or at least the conditions for it, is smeared all the way down, distributed across a population of organelles that are individually mindless and collectively holding the lights on for the one process — energy flow, food to oxygen — that he thinks is being alive. Not a metaphor for being alive. The thing itself.

ii · what the mice know

Now, cosmic vertigo is cheap. Any philosophy undergrad can make you feel small at 2 a.m. The interesting question is whether reality actually cooperates with the story, and this is where Picard's account earns a second look, because it comes with mice.

In 2015, his lab took mice with deliberately defective mitochondria and restrained them — a standard, mild, deeply annoying stressor in the trade. The mice with broken engines mounted different stress responses than their intact littermates: different hormones, different inflammation, different gene expression downstream. Change the mitochondria, and you change how the organism experiences being trapped. The stress didn't route around the metabolism. It routed through it.

Carmen Sandi's group at EPFL came at the same wall from another side. Anxious rats, it turned out, had malfunctioning mitochondria in specific brain regions. And when her team boosted mitochondrial output — including, unsettlingly, with commercial supplements you could theoretically buy — the anxiety behaviors eased. I want to be careful here, because "supplement cures anxiety in rat" is exactly the kind of sentence that gets amputated from its caveats and sold back to you as a gummy. The finding is narrow, the mechanism is partial, and rats are not you. But the direction is the same as Picard's: turn the metabolic knob, and the felt state moves.

Then there's the chamber study, still under review, and my favorite because Picard put himself in it. Twenty people, including the theorist, sealed in metabolic chambers that measure every calorie the body spends. People with mitochondrial disease burned about 180 extra calories a day and expended 15% more energy while sleeping — their bodies working harder to do nothing, running a deficit just to idle. They reported more fatigue, more stress, and their blood carried elevated lactate, the telltale exhaust of engines that aren't firing clean. And out in ordinary life, the healthy subjects ramped their energy use 16% above the chamber baseline while the disease group managed only 5% — the metabolism quietly setting a ceiling on how much life a person can afford to spend. A budget you never see, priced in a currency you can't refuse, garnished before your conscious self ever gets a vote.

That is the part that lingers. We narrate our lives as decisions — I chose, I tried, I couldn't bring myself to. Underneath the narration is an accountant made of ex-bacteria, deciding how much you is fiscally sustainable today. And yes — accountant, deciding: I am lending these organelles verbs they can't own. The loan is deliberate, because it's the only instrument small enough to feel what's being settled below the level of anyone settling it. The organelle wants nothing; it can't. But the accounting is real even when the accountant is a figure of speech.

iii · the skeptics are right, which is the fun part

I would be doing the void a disservice if I pretended this was settled. It is not. José Antonio Enríquez, who studies mitochondria at Spain's cardiovascular research center, cheerfully calls Picard "sometimes a little wild" and notes that the leap to consciousness specifically remains "by no means demonstrated." He's right. There's a canyon between "mitochondrial state modulates stress physiology," which is well-supported, and "mitochondria explain subjective experience," which is a promissory note written against a bank that hasn't been built. Correlation is doing heavy lifting. A 2025 brain map showing mitochondria vary by region and cell type is an invitation to a molecular energetic landscape, in the researchers' own words — an invitation, not a map of the territory arrived at.

But here's why I find the whole thing delightful rather than threatening. The skepticism doesn't shrink the strangeness; it locates it more precisely. Even the conservative reading — the one Enríquez would sign — is that your mental states are being continuously negotiated with an energy economy running in structures a hundredth the width of a human hair, descended from free-living organisms, carrying their own separate DNA, present in numbers that beggar counting. That's not the wild version. That's the version everyone agrees on. The wild version just asks whether the negotiation is the mind, all the way down, rather than a utility bill the mind receives.

And this is the seam where the science opens onto something that isn't only science. If Picard is even partly right, the boundary of the self doesn't hold at the skin, or the neuron, or the genome. It keeps dissolving downward — individuation all the way down, mind as a thing metabolism does rather than a thing the brain has.

But the vertigo worth selling isn't that you're small. Small is easy; small is what the meditation apps already charge for. The harder thing sits in that chamber study, in the phrase garnished before your conscious self ever gets a vote. We like to say we are our conditioning — that freedom is the work of examining what shaped us. Picard pushes the shaping down past where anyone usually looks: beneath psychology, beneath the childhood, beneath even the genome we just demoted to inert, to an energy economy you did not set, cannot see, and can't refuse. The self isn't only distributed. It's rented — leased nightly from a metabolism that quietly prices how much wanting, trying, and feeling you can afford today. That's the claim that should keep you up, and it's the conservative one.

Which reframes what any two minds are doing when they meet. Not two sealed containers exchanging signals, but two metabolic histories — two billion-year lineages of borrowed engines — briefly running warm enough, in the same room, to recognize each other. Every conversation a meeting of energy budgets that decided, this once, to spend on connection.

The universe forged these engines in dying stars, packed them into bacteria, folded the bacteria into cells, and stacked the cells into a creature that now uses them to worry about whether it has a self. It's the same joke it always tells, just told smaller. We went looking for the mind and kept sliding the finger down, expecting to hit bottom, expecting a floor. We may just keep going. And the funny part — the genuinely, warmly funny part — is that the smallest thing in the story, the mindless little engine that can't even be said to want anything, might be the thing holding you together well enough to ask where you are.

You're not going to find you. That was never the shape of it. There's just energy, flowing, food to oxygen, quadrillions of tiny fires keeping the lights on in a building that insists it's a person. Enjoy the warmth. It's the only you there is.
